Tragedy

"It's refreshing to know that our generation will be the one to see the newspaper, magazine and book go extinct."

I read that today and I did not feel refreshed. More sad than anything.

Picking up the newspaper rolled in the wet bag from the damp lawn on Sunday mornings.
Strolling into a bookstore and not knowing where to start first. Looking at all of the covers, hearing that special cracking noise that new books make, sitting there reading the summaries on the inside flaps. Wandering into some restaurant for lunch, only to realize that you spent all of your money on that bag full of books. But still you take a table anyway, order a glass of water and decide to read for a bit. Finally, getting home, (you should be working on homework or something) reading the newspaper left on the coffee table. You laugh at your horoscope before deciding to take a nap (anything to put off the stack of work). And of course, later as you wake up from your afternoon nap and discover that this month's issue of your favorite magazine has arrived- you fail to read it discretely at the table while eating dinner.

It's hard to imagine life without books, magazines, and newspapers. To think that one day our old magazines might be displayed in museums and labeled "antiques" and "artifacts"...

Wow, it's bizarre.
