Building An Empire

An empire waist works miracles: it emphasizes the waist (the smallest part of the body) and creates visual interest, drawing the eye upward. If you want to conceal the tummy or minimize hips, a dress with an empire waist is for you!
Things to look for when shopping for a dress with an empire waist:
  • The "V" neck- Creates more visual interests, while also elongating the neck which makes you appear taller.
  • An interesting print- Print is important, again adds more aesthetically pleasing elements. Not big on prints? A solid works fine and as well as going for dresses with subtle prints or soft stripes.
  • Try a sash or belt- An empire waist dress does not always have a defined band beneath the bust. It can be marked with a sash or a belt, both can also add pattern to a solid dress without being too overwhelming.
  • Ruching- Refers to the bunching together of fabric to create the distinguished waistline. An alternative to the above mentioned.
